Who We Are
Izani is a South Africa-based nonprofit creating opportunities in technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation in townships and rural areas.
For more than a decade, we worked as Global Leading Light Initiatives (GLLI), empowering thousands of young people and women in the Eastern Cape's townships and rural areas.
Under our new name, we continue the same mission, with fresh energy, stronger community ownership, and a vision for lasting change.
Why Izani?
“Izani” means “come forward” in isiXhosa and other Nguni languages.
It’s an invitation.
It is a reminder that each person carries potential inside them that is worth growing. Our role is to create the space and provide skills, resources and confidence for that potential to shine, so families and communities can thrive.
Our Mission
To break cycles of poverty by empowering communities with skills, resources and opportunities that build dignity, independence, and prosperity.
Our Vision
An Africa where every young person can live to their fullest potential, create opportunities, and lead change in their community.
Our Values
Collaboration:
We walk this road together with partners and communities.
Innovation:
We use creativity and technology to open doors.
Authentic Empowerment:
In our work we affirm the dignity and ownership of those we serve, so change lasts.
A New Chapter
As GLLI, we saw ideas grow into businesses, skills turn into livelihoods, and ambition spark opportunity.
In July 2025, we became Izani. The name was shaped through conversations with our team, board, and partners, and confirmed through a community-driven process.
Our name has changed, but our purpose has not. Izani is simply the next step: deepening local ownership, affirming dignity, and creating impact that lasts.
